I stepped into the crisp air and the gentle morning sunlight, inhaling deeply, filling my senses with the invigorating aroma of fresh mint. I scanned the plants in search of the perfect harvest. Once I had gathered eight of the best-looking mint leaves I could find, I went back inside to prepare mint tea with honey.
My mom and I sipped and played chess, as we did every morning that summer. She was battling high blood pressure, among other things, but the mint tea seemed to have a positive effect on her cardiovascular issues.
Mint Health Benefits
According to the National Library of Medicine, a science-based government resource, the mint plant offers many medicinal benefits including:
weight management
diabetes management
cardiovascular health
antimicrobial benefits (to fight colds and infections)
anti-inflammatory benefits (for sore muscles)
anti-oxidant benefits which help prevent cancer of the cervix, lung, breast, and many others
Honey Health Benefits
According to Cara Rosenbloom in an article on Good RX Health, “Studies show that a tsp of honey may be an effective remedy to limit coughs. The thick texture of honey may help lower the urge to cough, by coating and soothing the throat. It also has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.”
In addition, Rosenbloom tells us that honey contains antioxidants that help decrease inflammation of the throat as well as reduce mucus production.
Given this information, it’s no surprise that the fastest way to stop a tickly cough instantly is to eat a spoonful of honey!
Best Tea for Cold and Cough
I rarely get sick these days, likely due to my organic diet and healthy habits. But, when I’ve been sick in the past, I’ve tried different organic teas that are advertised as the “best tea for cold and cough.”
The teas labeled for “cold and cough” don’t help me because they always contain ingredients that don’t sit well in my stomach like echinacea and marshmallow root. These ingredients might help a lot of people, but they make me nauseous.
Because, of this, I’ve learned to rely on my simple mint tea with honey. In addition, I drink my spicy golden elixir when I need an immune boost.

How to Make Mint Tea with Honey (with fresh leaves)
If you want to make mint tea with honey from scratch, make sure to buy organic mint leaves. Or you can always grow your own mint! Mint plants are one of the easiest plants to grow. They tend to spread and take over once they start doing well. You can grow them from clippings of other plants! How cool is that?
Use quality honey in your mint tea. Local honey is usually the best way to help you fight off local allergies.
Select 4 mint leaves per serving, and wash them under cool water, making sure to remove any bugs that may be present.
If you have a mesh tea ball, dice the leaves with a knife before placing them in.
If you don’t have a mesh ball, simply place the leaves in a teacup, without cutting them.
Heat water to almost boiling.
Pour the water into the cup with the leaves and let them steep for 3 minutes.
Remove the leaves.
Add a spoonful of honey and stir well.
Drink warm if you are suffering from a sore throat or cold, otherwise you may drink it cold.
Enjoy!
Enjoy your mint tea with honey on a cold day, a hot day, or anytime you like!
