Where to Find Bluebonnet Fields

Bluebonnets aren’t hard to find where I live in Texas. The photos below were taken very close to my house! Click this link to find bluebonnet hot spots throughout The Lone Star State.

In other states, bluebonnets are known as “lupines.” They can be found as high up as Alaska and in a variety of other states including Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, and more! Try searching “bluebonnets” or “lupines” in your state and see what you can find.

Flowers are wild, so it can be tricky to pinpoint where they’ll pop up. Sometimes, you just have to keep your eyes open.

When are Bluebonnets in Bloom?

Bluebonnets can bloom from March through July, but this will vary by climate region and weather patterns. Texas suffers from periodic drought which can negatively impact bluebonnet blooms. We’ve had a lot of rain and warmth this year in Central Texas, so the bluebonnets started popping up around mid-March, but I expect them to be in full bloom around early to mid-April.

If you see a beautiful bluebonnet field, try to plan your photoshoot ASAP! Flowers can die as quickly as they came.

What to Wear for Bluebonnet Pictures

When deciding what to wear for bluebonnet photos, consider the color scheme and how you want to appear in the photo. Do you want to blend in or stand out? What feelings are you trying to convey from the shoot? Relaxation? Romance? Happiness? Hope?

I decided to go with a white dress because it matched the white tips of the bluebonnet flowers. It was a tough decision between this dress and a peach-colored western dress which would have matched the Indian paintbrush flowers that are speckled throughout. Yellow would have been beautiful too if I was going for a contrasting look against the bluebonnets. In addition, yellow would have matched the yellow flowers.

You can’t go wrong with a white dress for a bluebonnet photo shoot. I would not recommend wearing blue unless it is a light denim color. Ultimately, it’s up to you though! It’s your photo and your artistic vision!

Water Lily Photoshoot

Water lilies tend to bloom from May through September, but this can vary based on water availability. They can be found in ponds and lakes in warmer climates, and sometimes, they are listed on Google Maps as great photography locations.

This water lily photoshoot was in honor of my first year of sobriety. When I quit drinking cold turkey, I suffered from horrific alcohol withdrawals at this location which you can read about here.

I thought about getting in the water for this photo with a different outfit, but deadly water moccasin snakes like to hide among the lilies, and I didn’t want to risk dying there twice!

I chose to wear black because I wanted the mood of my outfit to contrast with the mood of the scenery.

It was like a funeral in which I said “goodbye,” to my former addicted self while engulfed in clear skies that represent better opportunities, and gold and green lilies that represent good fortune.

Tulip Photoshoot

Tulips bloom from mid-March through May. As with the other flowers, this can vary by climate and rain patterns. They grow in many states and are often open to the public for photoshoots! Search on Google Maps for a tulip farm near you!

Last year, to celebrate two years of sobriety, I visited a tulip farm for a photoshoot. I couldn’t find a friend to go with me that day, so this was the only selfie shot I managed to get.

Indian Paintbrush Photoshoot

This Indian paintbrush flower field in a local city park was so large I spotted it from a mile away when I was driving home from work one morning. I knew I had to take photos there, so I packed my outfits, accessories, makeup, and gear and took it to work with me the next night. After my graveyard shift, I drove to the spot, changed clothes in my car, and took advantage of the morning light.

Sunflower Photoshoot Ideas

Sunflowers grow in a variety of climates and can be easily found in the wild. They tend to bloom in the summer, but my husband and I spotted this commercial sunflower field in the fall in Lubbock, Texas.

We were technically trespassing to get this photo – something I do not recommend – but the field wasn’t enclosed in a fence, and there were no signs posted. So, we only spent about ten minutes there. In and out! If you see a beautiful sunflower field on private property, try to contact the farmer to get permission, or stay on the edge of the field so you aren’t trespassing!

I considered wearing white, red, and denim before I chose to wear this green dress that blends in with the sunflower stalks.

Sunflowers grow everywhere! We found this spot close to my house in between some dirt roads. If you saw the scene from far away, you’d probably wonder why we were taking photos there. That’s the power of photo-cropping!

I chose to wear this red Vera’s Eye Candy Texas Chainsaw Massacre dress because of the gorgeous primary color contrast effect.

Portrait Photography With Flowers

A portrait photo generally refers to a picture that focuses on your face. Portrait photography is so beautiful with flowers!

Some photographers I used to work with didn’t allow me to look at images throughout the shoot, so it was difficult to know if I was giving good expressions!

The cool thing about portraits is that you can easily do them with your cell phone! One of my favorite things about selfies with a phone is, I can flip the camera to see the faces I’m making.

The photo below was taken in my yard with an eastern redbud tree. They can be found throughout North America and tend to bloom in the spring.

I had to park my car under the tree and stand on top of it to get this shot! The process was anything but glamorous, but I’m happy with the result! The sunset lighting was gorgeous and added some fun shadow play to the photo.

The portrait below was taken when I was recovering from my hysterectomy. I was told that moderate exercise is essential during recovery. For the first few weeks, I was only able to walk, but the spring flowers were so lovely and they lifted my mood! I’m not sure what kind of flowers these are.

One of the things I like about this shot is the bold primary color scheme. The red sunglasses, yellow flowers, green foliage, and blue sky, all contrast with each other greatly. The black and white outfit adds further contrast to make this photo pop!

This next photo was also taken while I was recovering from my hysterectomy. Can you tell I was in some pain?

I chose to wear earrings made by my friend, Barefoot Pony, and a top that matched the color of the thistles perfectly! Sometimes I pop and sometimes I blend!
