Why Use DIY Anti-Aging Face Masks?
DIY Anti-Aging Face Masks Are More Effective Than Store Bought
If you are the type of person who spends time and energy applying face masks to achieve younger looking skin, I can bet you want the best quality skin care mask you can get. When a store bought face mask offers Vitamin A, C, E, or any other thing that sounds natural and healthy, they don’t usually tell you that these are synthetic vitamins.
According to an evidence based article by Mary Jane Brown, PhD, on Healthline called Synthetic Vs Natural Nutrients, synthetic nutrients just aren’t as good as natural ones that come from real food sources. And, Dr. Eric Berg further explains why in this YouTube video:
It stands to reason that since natural sources of vitamins are better for your diet, they are also better for your skin, which is why DIY organic food based face masks are more effective at helping you achieve younger looking skin.
Safer
Many people assume that shopping for well known cosmetics and beauty products in a well known store must mean that the products are safe. Unsafe products would be banned, right? But, many of the popular brands you see on shelves contain harsh chemical ingredients that aren’t even legal in some countries!
The list of banned beauty and skin care ingredients is around 1,300 in Canada and European countries, but many of those same ingredients are legal in the United States which has only banned 11.
Tina Sigurdson, of The Environmental Working Group in Washington, D.C., says, “Beauty products aren’t preapproved before they hit the market, which surprises a lot of people.” She goes on to explain that companies aren’t even required to make sure the products are safe and that the FDA has no control over the safety of cosmetic products, which can be read in this letter from the FDA to a Senator about the topic.
In other words, you’re on your own when it comes to making sure the beauty and hygiene products you and your family use are safe! The best way to know for sure that a face mask is safe for your skin is to make it yourself from organic foods. When you DIY, you can feel confident that your mask is safely delivering those vitamins your skin craves while giving you a more youthful appearance.
DIY Anti-Aging Face Masks Are Eco-Friendly
Another benefit of DIY anti-aging face masks is that they are eco-friendly. The ingredients used for many DIY masks come in biodegradable packaging such as banana peel and avocado skin. Store bought face masks usually come in plastic packaging. So, by choosing to make your face mask from organic foods, you are reducing plastic waste! Great job!
3 Best DIY Anti-Aging Fask Mask Recipes
1. Banana, Avocado, Carrot: For Toning and Tightening Skin
Organic Ingredients: Banana, Avocado, Carrot Puree
Bananas
Bananas are packed with anti-aging B6, magnesium, potassium, vitamin C, manganese, and antioxidants. When used in a face mask, this fruit has a toning and tightening affect that helps reduce fine lines on skin as well as under eye circles!
Avocados
Avocados contain anti-aging vitamins: B1, B2, B3, C, E, K, folate, potassium, magnesium, and carotenoids. The fat in the avocado provides moisture for this mask while still having a toning and tightening affect.
Carrots
Carrots contain an insane amount of anti-aging vitamin A, which helps promote collagen production and new skin cell growth. Carrots also help fight acne, tighten and tone skin, and provide a healthy glow.
Prepare:
- Make this recipe fresh in small amounts for each use, since it does not keep well.
- Mash equal parts organic banana and avocado in a container with a fork. A pestle and mortar can also be used.
- Add in organic carrot puree and stir to desired consistency. (Organic carrot puree can be found in the baby food section in cute little reusable jars.)
Apply:
- Pull hair back, so it is out of the way.
- Wash and dry face and neck.
- Make sure you are either wearing something that you don’t mind getting stained, or apply the mask during a soak bath.
- Apply generously to face and neck. It is ok to get this mask on your eyebrows, but avoid the eyes.
- Leave on your skin for about 30 minutes, or until you feel it dry up completely.
- Rinse with warm water. (Or, for maximum effect, apply a second layer, and let it dry before rinsing.)
2. Honey Greek Yogurt: For Extra Moisturization While Toning
Organic Ingredients: Honey and Greek Yogurt
Honey
Thank you bees! Honey naturally kills bacteria, fights acne, and provides deep hydration, making this magical ingredient ideal for oily and dry skin types alike!
Greek Yogurt
You’ve probably heard that probiotics are good for your digestive system, but did you know that they are essential for healthy skin too? Feel the toning power of plain Greek yogurt as it tightens your skin to the point where you’re like, “Woah, settle down there, yogurt!” The calcium in Greek yogurt also replenishes moisture and reduces lines by encouraging skin cell growth and repair.
Prepare:
- Archaeologists have discovered perfectly preserved honey in many ancient Egyptian tombs, meaning this recipe will last in your refrigerator as long as the yogurt doesn’t expire!
- Mix equal parts honey and Greek yogurt and stir until blended well.
Apply:
- Pull hair back, so it is out of the way.
- Wash and dry face and neck.
- Make sure you are either wearing something that you don’t mind getting stained, or apply mask during a soak bath.
3. Oatmeal Soy Sauce
Organic Ingredients: Oatmeal, Soy Sauce, and Cheese Cloth
Oatmeal
Oatmeal is high in anti-aging antioxidants and is ultra moisturizing – making it the perfect remedy for dry and itchy skin. It has a thick slimy texture when cooked, which penetrates your pores, and leaves your face feeling silky smooth after the mask is washed away.
Soy Sauce
It’s difficult to track down a reputable source that confirms soy sauce to be a healthy face mask ingredient. But, what we do know is that it is packed with antioxidants, which are anti-aging. I use soy sauce in my face masks, because it makes my skin glow! Just make sure to buy organic soy sauce, and check the ingredients! Avoid anything with questionable preservatives like sodium benzoate or artificial flavor enhancers like MSG.

Treating your skin with the gentle care that it deserves requires attention to detail. That’s why I only use cheesecloth made with organic, unbleached cotton. Click here to buy the finest quality cheesecloth!
Another great feature of this product is that it comes in plastic-free packaging, so you can treat the earth and yourself!
Prepare:
- Pour some good, clean water in a pot and set on high heat until it boils.
- Lay a square piece of cheese cloth into a steel or glass bowl making sure the cloth is big enough for the edges of it to come out of the top of the bowl. (I used this recipe for years, before my gorgeous friend Catrina told me she wraps hers in a cloth to avoid chunky oatmeal messes!!!)
- Put about a golf ball sized amount of oats into a blender or grinder. Blend up the dried oats until they are small flakes.
- Put the oatmeal in the bottom of the bowl, on top of the cheese cloth.
- Add some boiling water onto the oatmeal while it rests on the cheese cloth at the bottom of the bowl.
- Gently stir and mash with a fork along the sides of the bowl well, making sure not to rip the cheese cloth while letting the oatmeal absorb the water. Don’t make it a paste yet. You want the oatmeal to be kind of stiff and able to build peaks.
- Add enough soy sauce to make it into a paste.
- Bring the edges of the cheese cloth together and tie them with a rubber band. You should see slimy liquid seeping out through the cheesecloth.
Apply:
- Pull hair back, so it is out of the way.
- Wash and dry face and neck.
- Make sure you are either wearing something that you don’t mind getting stained, or apply mask during a soak bath.
