Tallow Soap Balm Deodorant And More

Hello, lovelies! You’re in for a treat today because this post is all about tallow products like tallow soap, tallow balm, tallow deodorant, and more!

I discovered Fat Chap Co. through my husband who has known the owner, Ellen Van Vleck, for many years. I have always loved Fat Chap Co. soaps, and Ellen threw in some tallow deodorant with a recent order that I am so impressed with!

I asked the beautiful and fascinating Ellen if I could do a feature on her and her company, and she said, “Yes!” Enjoy!

What is Tallow?

In the words of Fat Chap Co., “Tallow is a type of rendered fat that comes from beef or mutton (lamb). It has been used for centuries as a skincare ingredient due to its moisturizing and nourishing properties. Tallow contains a high concentration of fatty acids, which are essential for maintaining healthy skin. It is rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, which are all beneficial for skin health.”

Women Butchers

According to Statista.com, women accounted for only 25.4% of butchers in the United States in 2022. I love to see women excelling in male-dominated careers, as a woman who has worked in a few myself.

Ellen sources the fat for her tallow products from the butcher shop she works at called The Meating Place. Out of the 40 butchers that work there, 6 of them are female.

Check out The Meating Place Instagram page to meat, I mean meet, the other female butchers!

Whole Animal Butcher

When Ellen started working as a butcher, it pained her to see that suet and fat account for about 30% of the waste in rendering buckets at the Meating Place. A lot of that fat ended up in the landfill until she started making use of it.

Ellen is a true whole-animal butcher. Through her company, Fat Chap Co., she utilizes what was once considered waste and transforms it into nourishing and fragrant skin care products like tallow soap, tallow balm, and tallow deodorant.

Ellen says, “Utilizing the whole animal in butchery is important for reducing waste, maximizing value, supporting sustainable practices, and preserving traditional skills.”

Hey, I thought Seen & Green Was Cruelty-Free!

Recently a vegan “friend” dumped me because I posted a picture of my deer kill. She asked, “How can you support cruelty-free cosmetics while killing animals?”

I explained to her that I do not support the lifelong torture and inhumane treatment of animals in the name of “beauty” and “science” especially when the information gained in labs isn’t utilized. Toxic cosmetics are widely sold whether they make rabbits blind or not. There are more reasons I don’t support animal testing which can be read about here.

However, as an omnivore, meat is an essential part of my diet. Don’t hate the player, hate the game. I didn’t invent the rules for survival. I just live here.

Having said all of that, I asked Ellen about The Meating Place’s slaughter practices, and this is what she said, “As far as the slaughter goes, it’s as humane and cruelty-free as it gets.  It’s done on sight, at the farms. The animals aren’t stressed because they are at home and as soon as they dispatch, the animal is already brain dead, thanks to our very skilled slaughtermen. I have a lot of vegetarian, and vegan customers, because they understand the background of the animal and that the animal was on someone’s small local farm, raised and killed humanely to feed their family. I am trying to honor this animal by preventing as little waste as possible.”

Tallow Products

Tallow Soap

Tallow soap is ultra-moisturizing, making it a lifesaver for people who suffer from dry skin like myself, and Fat Chap Co. makes the most delightful soaps I’ve ever tried!

Ellen says, “Every batch of soap is unique and special because it’s handcrafted in small batches of 40 bars. We use the traditional cold-processed saponification and hand-cut each bar by hand which means every batch is made with care.”

Fat Chap Co. soaps smell so wonderful, you’ll want to eat them! But, please don’t eat them. Try flavors, I mean scents, like:

Tallow Soap

  • Turkish Mocha – A sweet mix of milk, cardamom, cocoa, nutmeg, vanilla, honey, and Turkish coffee. Using real coffee beans this soap gives you a nice and mild exfoliation while waking you up.
  • Blackberry Lemonade –  The soap offers a burst of sweet and tangy fragrance that awakens the senses and leaves a refreshing aroma on the skin.
  • Purifying Citrus Charcoal – Charcoal has a porous structure that allows it to absorb impurities and toxins from the skin, making it an effective ingredient for deep cleansing. Charcoal soap can help to remove dirt, oil, and other impurities from the skin.
  • Strawberries & Cream – Combines the fresh and sweet aroma of strawberries and the comforting notes of dairy cream.
  • Lemon Bergamot – Enriched with natural extracts of zesty lemon and aromatic bergamot, it awakens your senses, leaving you feeling energized and uplifted.

Whipped Tallow Cream

In a previous post called Use Beef Tallow on Dry Skin, I talked about how people who suffer from chronically dry skin don’t produce enough sebum naturally, often due to genetics.

Animal tallow contains sebum similar to the type of sebum that the human body produces, which means your skin can absorb it easily. In fact, the word “sebum” is Latin for “tallow.”

In my post, I show you how to make beef tallow at home. However, there are some downsides to making tallow my way. Sometimes you have to scrape meaty chunks off before you can rub it on your skin, and just like any food, it has a short shelf life!

In contrast, Fat Chap Co. makes whipped tallow cream that is pure and beautiful with no meaty chunks, and it has a longer shelf life. Ellen achieves all of this without the harsh chemical preservatives that many companies use!

Tallow Deodorant

I’ve tried to scoot away from plastic deodorant containers, opting for cardboard tubes in the past, but the brands I tried were too dry to apply and I had to throw them away! It made me deeply sad because I really wanted the cardboard tube to work out, but I assumed the reason it didn’t work was that the cardboard didn’t provide an air-tight seal, which caused the stick to dry out. Feeling defeated, I went back to plastic.

Ellen saved my pits from eco-friendly damnation when my husband ordered some soap from her, and she threw in some Fat Chap Co. deodorant in cardboard tubes!

I. Am. So. Impressed.

The first thing I noticed upon opening the tube was that the stick didn’t look dried out. Hell yeah. I thought. Maybe there is hope for the planet.

The second thing I noticed was the enticing smell of orange blossom. Yes, please. Let’s get you in these pits.

The third thing I noticed was a sensation my poor neglected pits had never felt before; tender loving care. It’s like I was treating my underarms to a spa day! Ellen’s tallow deodorant is deeply nourishing.

I know you’re wondering, “But does it work?” Let me put it this way. When I die, bury me with a stick of tallow deodorant. I’ll be the nicest-smelling person in Hell with scents like:

  • Cedar – Spruce
  • Lavender – Jasmine
  • Citrus – Tea Tree
  • Orange Blossom
  • Natural (non-scented)
