The Beauty of Being a Multipotentialite

I only recently learned the term, “multipotentialite,” while I was trying to find an explanation online for why I am the way I am. I used to compare myself to people that specialize in one profession for their entire lives, and I’d feel bad about myself for having so many random interests, but after discovering people like me, I now see the beauty of being a multipotentialite.

What is a Multipotentialite?

Before we explore the beauty of being a multipotentialite, we must first define what a multipotentialite is.

Wikipedia defines “multipotentiality” as “an educational and psychological term referring to the ability and preference of a person, particularly one of strong intellectual or artistic curiosity, to excel in two or more different fields.”

Therefore, a multipotentialite is a person with a multitude of passions and creative interests in life.

If you are a multipotentialite, you may find it difficult to stick with a particular career, residence, or hobby for an extended length of time. You might refer to yourself as a, “Jack or Jill of all trades, but a master of none.” When people ask you what you do for fun, you may have to stop and ask yourself, “How am I going to narrow this answer down?”

I know I am a multipotentialite, because I changed my major in college 4 times. My career history ranges from middle school science teacher, to professional driver, to water operator. And, the list of hobbies and activities I am into is very long.

When I started this blog I consumed a lot of online advice, and one of the biggest tips for success was to choose as narrow of a niche as possible. Top bloggers warn that lifestyle blogs are difficult to rank for in Google searches, because when the algorithm detects too many subjects on one website, it doesn’t consider the site to be a good authority on any subject.

Despite this knowledge, I decided to make this a lifestyle blog, because I find it impossible to narrow my focus!

The Beauty of Being a Multipotentialite

We Never Get Bored

The beauty of being a multipotentialite is that we never get bored, because we are too busy mixing things up. We thrive off of exploring new avenues of life.

Multipotentialites are multitalented

Multipotentialites are multitalented which is significant for a few reasons.

Firstly, job hunting is made easy by the fact that we are qualified to fulfill a variety of positions, whereas someone who specializes in only one field may have to wait a long time before a position in their area becomes available.

Secondly, the variety of skills that we possess are sometimes interrelated which increases our value as employees.

Thirdly, having so many interests and hobbies inevitably exposes us to a large pool of people to connect and network with which can offer significant advantages in our social, mental, and financial well-being.

Lastly, the multitalented are usually considered attractive. If you are a multipotentialiate, awestruck people have probably asked you things like, “Wow! Is there anything you don’t do?”

Multipotentialites are Problem Solvers

Another advantage to being a multipotentialite is that we are excellent problem solvers. Because our brains are naturally geared towards identifying many pathways, we are useful allies in times of conflict and confusion. Where a super focused person sees only a locked door, the multipotentialite will find a way to pick the lock or even crawl through the doggy door. Hey, whatever works!

Fantabuloustef: An Inspiring Multipotentialite

Since recently learning that other multipotentialites like me exist, I have taken an interest in learning more about them. Fantabuloustef is an inspiring French multipotentialite that I found on Medium.com while reading her article called, “Unlocking the Healing Power of Art: How it Enhances Our Well-being and Health.”

However, writing and creating art are not her only talents. Fantabuloustef has worked in many different career fields over the years.

Different Career Fields

As a child, she was interested in and performed well in a wide range of school subjects, making it difficult for her to decide on a career path. Eventually, she ended up choosing software engineering. Later on, Fantabuloustef became a project manager, and after that, a business analyst.

Fantabuloustef said that the business analyst position was able to satisfy her curious nature, because her “role was to meet people from different industrial domains and understand their businesses, their job, and their needs, in order to design appropriate software solutions.”

Her True Calling

So, what does a multipotentialite like Fantabuloustef do after she proves that she can conquer the world in any profession she pleases? She decides to focus on her true calling; art.

With the help of savings from her previous job, Fantabuloustef was able to focus on creating and marketing her art full-time.

Diverse Art Styles

Her article, Unlocking the Healing Power of Art: How it Enhances Our Well-being and Health,” features original art, and I was intrigued and impressed by the range of diverse styles she has mastered. Fantabuloustef is truly talented.

However, when I told her how much I love her variety, she said that there is a downside to it, because some customers prefer consistency, so offering that much variety makes it challenging to sell art. But, being the multipotentialite that she is, Fantabuloustef simply cannot confine herself to creating the same type of art all the time. It would be too boring for her.

I am glad she hasn’t limited her talents to only one style of artistic expression, because the results of that wild and uninhibited exploration are fascinating.

Multipotentialites are Daring

Multipotentialites are daring, because we follow our passions despite the consequences like I mentioned earlier about my blog not being about a narrow enough topic to rank well on with Google’s algorithm.

Fantabuloustef’s decision to create whatever kind of art she damn well pleases is daring, because like she said, there is the small downside of certain customers preferring consistency.

Many famous artists have a signature style that makes their work immediately identifiable. For example, it is easy to tell the difference between a Rembrandt and Picasso painting. Having a signature style offers the advantage of providing a sense of familiarity and comfort to patrons. But, is it daring? Sure, they may be daring within their styles, but they remain within their styles. You could say they color within the lines. (Ha, puns…)

Fantabuloustef is too cool to stick to one genre of art. She’s daring not only because of her willingness to forgo the typical signature route that so many artists conform to and benefit from, but also because of her bravery towards challenging herself to master a variety of styles when practicing the same style all the time would technically be easier.
