You’re probably wondering, “How the heck is a stinky little fish going to help me achieve my anti-aging goals?”
Here’s how.
You could buy all of the makeup and plastic surgery in the world, but if you aren’t taking care of your health and consuming essential nutrients, your skin will reflect that.
In other words, there is no shortcut to true beauty.
Beauty may only be skin-deep, but healthy skin comes from within!
Sardines Anti Aging Nutrition
It’s hard to find a single food source that offers as many nutrients as sardines do. According to the USDA sardines are loaded with:
- protein
- omega-3 fatty acids
- calcium
- iron
- magnesium
- phosphorus
- potassium
- zinc
- copper
- selenium
- Niacin
- folate
- choline
- b-12
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin E
- Vitamin D
- Vitamin K
- and more!
Wow! Sardines are a superfood!
The National Library of Medicine says, “Beauty comes from the inside,” noting that vitamins A, D, and E and essential omega-3 fatty acids, and proteins have been found to “promote skin health and beauty.”
TNLM also reports that vitamin E from food sources, “Helps against collagen cross-linking and lipid peroxidation, which are both linked to aging of the skin.”
In addition, vitamin D helps prevent skin cancer, “Which is linked to anti-aging effects,” and according to registered dietician Julia Zumpano, sardines are one of the few food sources that you can obtain vitamin D naturally.
According to WebMD, sardines also have Coq10 which is widely known as an anti-aging nutrient.
Sardines Reduce Oxidative Stress
Medical News Today says, “Oxidative stress can damage cells, proteins, and DNA, which can contribute to aging. It may also play a role in the development of a range of health conditions, including diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.”
However, the National Library of Medicine tells us that sardines contain nutrients that reduce oxidative stress.
As a bonus, sardines reduce inflammation and help prevent cardiovascular disease.
Sardines have low mercury content
Seafood is known to contain mercury, a toxin that can contribute to health problems and aging.
However, according to the FDA, some fish have more than others, and sardines have low mercury levels compared to many other fish.
Tuna has some of the highest mercury levels than any other fish, which is why I usually avoid it at sushi restaurants and elsewhere. Luckily, sardines have a similar flavor to tuna!
Eat Anti Aging Sardines!
This article only scratches the scales of sardine nutrition. To do this fish justice, I’d have to write a novel about the anti-aging benefits of eating sardines!
Devoting energy toward anti-aging techniques sounds like a superficial and futile concept to some, because aging is a natural process that happens to the best of us.
On that note, maybe it’s better to look at it this way; it’s not about anti-aging, it’s about aging well and looking and feeling great for as long as possible.
Stay tuned for a future post about how to make a tasty sardine sandwich. It’s easy!
