Silver Spiritual Meaning

Horror fans know that silver has a historical, spiritual symbolism associated with protection from evil creatures like werewolves and vampires.

This is evidenced by the popular belief that a silver bullet is known to be the best way to kill a werewolf.

In addition, vampires do not have a reflection because antique mirrors were often made with silver pressed behind glass.

However, protection isn’t the only thing that silver is associated with. Many associate the precious metal with so much more:

  • Insight
  • Wisdom
  • Purification
  • Dignity
  • Glamour
  • Self-Control
  • Balancing
  • Feminine Power
  • And more!

Spiritual Benefits of Wearing Silver

If you don’t believe in witchy and symbolic stuff, there is still an undeniably practical side to the psychological, and therefore spiritual, benefits of wearing silver.

Personally, when I adorn myself with quality silver, it makes me feel valuable, not just because of the vanity aspect.

It goes deeper than that.

Wearing silver is an act of self-love.

The process of putting it on is like a ritual of self-affirmation in which I am saying, “I deserve this because I am beautiful.”

Wearing fine jewelry makes me feel like royalty.

Before you write this off as entirely vain, let’s dig a little further into the psyche.

The scariest man I have ever dated did not want me to wear jewelry.

Why?

Because he knew that wearing jewelry made me look beautiful and feel empowered, and that went against his code. His goal was to strip me of power and autonomy, so I would be easy to control and abuse.

I didn’t abide by his requests to dull my shine, and I didn’t date him for long.

That is how powerful and spiritual fine silver jewelry can be.

It doesn’t just protect you from werewolves and vampires. It can protect you from narcissists, too!

Nine Amulets: Powerful Spiritual Jewelry

I digitally met Leonardo Del Toro, the creator of Nine Amulets Jewelry, through Medium, as we are both writers there. I’m a fan of silver, so I decided to check out his work.

Wow!

Medieval rings! Honeycomb rings! Celestial rings! Dragon rings!

Oh, yeah, and he makes amulets, too!

I was already working on the concept of powerful, spiritual jewelry when I checked out his blog.

In one of his posts, Leonardo says, “Jewelry is intricately linked to our social life and how we interact and present ourselves socially. This is so self-evident it’s an indicator of how happy and socially connected we are.” (This is why my narcissistic ex-boyfriend didn’t want me to wear jewelry because he wanted to isolate me from others.)

In another post, Leonardo talks about the spiritual significance of silver.

He notes that it is often used to express one’s faith like in the case of religious pendants.

In addition, Leonardo tells us that silver is used to maintain connections with our loved ones who have passed on. I cherish the silver necklace that was my grandmother’s and the turquoise rings that my dad made before I was born!

After reading a few of Leonardo Del Toro’s blog posts on powerful, spiritual jewelry, I had to interview him.

How Long Have You Been Making Jewelry?

I started making jewelry in the late 70s with my hippie friends. I was probably in my early 20s.

I kept the craft until the late 80s after working for five years for Rober Lee Moris in NYC.

After the 80s, I stopped making jewelry for a long while.

I resumed about 20 years later and re-emerged in a whole different world when the Internet played a huge part in how we sell things and show the world.

How Did You Get Into the Craft?

I had one dear friend who introduced me to the craft.

My friends and I used to make pretty colorful earrings out of thread and cool bracelets out of leather.

However, I wanted to go deeper and started to explore metal bending soldering and all other techniques. Today I mainly use casting since I like sculpture and I treat jewelry like mini sculptures. I create my pieces using the wax carving technique and also use CAD to 3D print wax and turn them into metal.

What is Your Favorite Thing About Making Jewelry?

I love the process of making it.

I love spending hours in my shop listening to music and working hard to create something that will stand out.

Maybe run into a lucky event when something unexpected happens, and the results turn out to be beautiful.

I also love it when people buy it. Not because of the money, but because I feel like when people pull hard-earned money out of their pockets is the ultimate validation of my work.

But today, making jewelry includes a whole bag of other skills ranging from being a photographer, using Photoshop, keeping a website, and marketing online. You have to buy your materials start from scratch, and have time to be creative and true to your craft.

It is much more profitable to buy your jewelry wholesale and sell it online and that is what many people do. Not me.

I also enjoy knowing that the jewelry I make and it is so intimate to me will be worn by someone in some part of the world. I get a kick out of that. How long will one of my rings live? A few generations.

It is a way I feel I communicate to the world and a wide number of people.

How Can People Tell the Difference Between Cheap & Quality Jewelry?

Of course, there are so many kinds of jewelry out there. Most of it is industrialized. Sold as cheaply as possible and mass-produced in China. Some of it is not bad in design but they will not last very long. Usually, they are plated or filled with precious metal that will soon wear out. I’m not opposed to gold-plated items and I’m working on some vermeil (gold-plated over silver) pieces.

In order to tell the difference between quality jewelry and something that is mass-produced is not very easy because the intent of mass-produced things is – to fool the person into thinking they are buying something of value for cheap.

There are some hints, however. If you see a gold ring selling for 45 dollars, you know it is not gold.

There are lots of lab-made gems, and some of them are nice. And I like the concept of lab-made gems because they are mining-free and we all know how bad mining is to the environment. So, I’m starting to use them out of a sustainability factor.

To know these differences you have to be a jewelry collector, avid buyer, or a jeweler. It takes some education.

You can look at design quality, construction, and price. However, prices can be all over the place. There are people out there who will tell you a story about their jewelry and charge you a lot. In the end, jewelry is like wine. If you like it, it is a good wine.
