After a few failed attempts at making sticky rice, I finally figured it out, and I’m so happy to share what I’ve learned with you! Don’t worry. You don’t even need a rice cooker or a sticky rice steamer pot. Today, you are going to learn how to make sticky rice on the stove.

(Note: There are likely many ways to achieve sticky rice. This method works well for me, especially since I live in a tiny house and don’t have much kitchen space for fancy cookware items.)

Best Rice for Making Sticky Rice

If you want to make really sticky rice, like the kind served in restaurants, it needs to be labeled as “glutinous” or “sweet,” because these are the best types of rice for making sticky rice.

Where to Buy Glutinous Sweet Rice

Being an all-organic eater, it took me some time to track down the best sticky rice, but I finally found it! Whether you primarily eat organic or not, you’ll love McCabe’s glutinous, sweet, sticky rice for its quality, flavor, and affordability.

How to Make Sticky Rice on the Stove

Ingredients

Steps

  1. Without rinsing, put the rice in a stainless steel pot.
  2. Pour the water over the rice and put a tight-fitting lid on the pot.
  3. Set the heat to “high” until the water boils.
  4. Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat to “medium-low” and simmer with the lid on for about 10 minutes. (You may have to temporarily tilt the lid to release some of the steam if the water is about to boil over the sides.)
  5. Scoop a small amount of rice onto a spoon and let it cool. Take a bite of it to check it for consistency. If the rice is soft and chewy, remove the pot from the heat, and remove the lid for 5 minutes. (If the rice is still hard, let it cook for a few more minutes with the lid on, adding a small amount of water if all of the water has cooked out.)
  6. After 5 minutes with the lid off, stir the rice in large sweeping motions, (let the large clumps stay together). Make sure to stir the rice from the bottom of the pan and scoop it upward.
  7. Put the lid back on and leave it on for 3 minutes.
  8. Take the lid off again and let the rice sit on the stove until it becomes sticky to the consistency of your liking! (This should take about 5 to 10 minutes.)

Enjoy your sticky rice! I really enjoy adding it to Asian soups!

I used to work at a Thai restaurant in Oregon. The cooks always told me I was going to get fat because I ate so much of their food! I couldn’t help it. I was addicted. Since I was broke, I’d often order the only thing on the menu that I could afford, and I never got tired of it; tom kha soup with sticky rice.
