Do you want to know how to make natural face powder? Seen and Green has got you covered! Today I will be revealing my favorite face powder recipe that I have been using for over 10 years.

If you find DIY projects to be overwhelming, don’t worry! This is probably the most simple DIY makeup recipe you will ever come across.

Why Should You Make Natural Face Powder?

Many Store Bought Cosmetics Are Toxic!

Did you know that many store-bought cosmetics are toxic? This may sound shocking, but after learning how little of a role the FDA plays in protecting the public from unsafe cosmetics, it is no surprise at all.

In a government document, the FDA says, “The law does not require cosmetic products and ingredients, other than color additives, to have FDA approval before they go on the market.”

That same document reveals that recalls of dangerous and toxic chemicals found in cosmetics, “are voluntary actions taken by manufacturers of distributors.” That’s like cops expecting you to voluntarily write yourself a ticket for going 100 miles per hour in a 25-mile-per-hour school zone.

Wow. Just… Wow.

So, cosmetic companies basically do whatever they want without consequence, until they get caught. When that happens, they usually just pay a settlement and keep slinging products as usual.

Lawsuits against cosmetic companies are more common than people realize, because it’s not hot news. You have to actively search for articles about the dangers associated with beauty products like the ones called, “Dozens of Lawsuits Claim Hair Relaxers Cause Cancer and Other Health Problems,” and “Talcum Powder Lawsuit Update July, 2023.”

You Can Trust the Ingredients When You Make Your Own Natural Face Powder

Have you ever tried to read and understand the ingredients listed in popular cosmetics? I have. It’s not an easy or quick process. It’s a ton of work that I like to avoid.

If you make your own natural face powder, you can trust the ingredients, because you know exactly what is in your product. Hell, you could eat the ingredients in your face powder recipe if you wanted to. It’s that safe.

Save Money by Making Your Own Face Powder

Think about how much money you have spent on face powder over the years.

If you are used to buying “luxury brand” makeup, you have been spending way too much money on face powder. I put “luxury brand” in quotations, because it’s all just hyped-up bullshit.

What is so luxurious about disgusting toxic chemicals that are going to give you cancer someday? Nothing. The luxury is in branding, popularity, advertising, and image. If that all sounds super shallow and meaningless, that’s because it is.

If you want luxury, invest in luxurious things where it counts like expensive caviar that is actually good for you.

However, if you are a thrifty beauty shopper, face powder has only cost you a few bucks here and there, so you may think that you aren’t spending a lot of money, but you were buying small amounts! When you buy your own natural face powder ingredients in bulk, you are saving money in the long run. (The cheap stuff is just as toxic as the “luxury” stuff, by the way.)

You will save money by making your own natural face powder, because you aren’t being overcharged for image branding and you can buy the ingredients in bulk amounts.

Making Natural Face Powder is Eco-friendly.

Making natural face powder is eco-friendly for a few reasons:

  1. Buying face powder from a store is wasteful. A tiny amount of powder resides in a plastic container, and then that plastic container sits inside a clear plastic housing as well. As I mentioned above, you can buy natural face powder ingredients in bulk amounts, which greatly reduces the amount of waste involved with your skincare routine. The ingredients listed for how to make your own natural face powder may come in plastic, but the ratio of product-to-plastic is more eco-friendly.
  2. A better product-to-plastic ratio means less pollution for 2 reasons: 1. Less plastic was produced for the packaging of your face powder. 2. Fewer fossil fuels were burned to transport your face powder. (It is wasteful to ship products across the country and the world when trucks are filled with lots of plastic packaging and not much actual product.)
  3. The production of toxic makeup products is bad for the environment, because by-products are inevitably produced and sent to waterways and landfills.

Sericite Mica (Untreated and Uncolored)

Mica is a naturally occurring mineral dust found in nature. It is one of the 2 ingredients you will need to make natural face powder. Make sure that the mica you purchase is uncolored and untreated.

Here is a link for a fantastic brand that I love on Etsy! It is so beautiful, silky, and shimmery!

Sericite mica is completely safe and natural to use as a cosmetic ingredient according to everyone, including the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

Cocoa Powder

I know you know what cocoa powder is! Yes, your 2nd natural face powder ingredient is cocoa powder; the same stuff you use to bake brownies!

How to Make Natural Face Powder

  • Clean and dry a good amount of counter space in your kitchen.
  • Gather all of your ingredients and materials.
  • Mix 1 tablespoon of mica and 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder in a large mixing bowl, and whisk together. Look at the color and compare it to the color of your facial skin. Add more cocoa to make your powder darker, or add more sericite mica to make your powder lighter.
  • Mix with the whisk after each addition, and keep an eye on the color.
  • Make sure to record your measurements, so you know how to make your perfect face powder for next time!
  • When you think you have made a good color match, test a small amount by applying it to your face.
  • Add more cocoa or mica as needed until you have a natural face powder that matches your skin tone!
  • Use a spoon to fill your containers with natural face powder.
  • Rewrite your recorded measurements if needed, so you have a nice and neat natural face powder recipe. This will streamline the process for the next time you make it!

Add mica and cocoa a tablespoon at a time. Mix after each addition, and check the color.

Mix your face powder with the whisk. When it looks close to the skin color of your face, test some using your kabuki brush. You do NOT have to make this much especially if it is your first time! I made a bulk amount.

How to Apply Natural Face Powder

Apply your natural face powder the same way that you normally apply face powder.

If you want to go all in with natural complexion care, try moisturizing your face before bed with homemade beef tallow. Let the tallow soak into your pores overnight. When you wake up for makeup, just use the natural face powder by itself to touch up shiny spots and red spots.

With this skincare routine, you may not even need concealers or foundations!

How to Store Natural Face Powder

Get ready for the easiest part of this entire process… There is no special way to store this face powder. It maintains its shelf life forever, as far as I can tell.

I have used my face powder in a variety of climates, from the moisture-filled Oregon air to the dry and hot Texas climate. I’ve left it in my car for weeks at a time. Its consistency remains the same over time. It never clumps up, or loses its powdery sheen. As far as I know, it never expires.
