How To Make Hot Chocolate On The Stove

This post isn’t just about how to make hot chocolate with cocoa powder on the stove. This recipe is special, because it uses cheese.

Wait – Why would you put cheese in hot cocoa? I’ll tell you why. Because Ski Queen brown cheese tastes like caramel, as I’ve mentioned in a previous post. Actually, in my opinion, it tastes better than caramel. You might think so too!

Why Homemade Hot Chocolate is Better

If you have read any of my posts, you know what I’m going to say. Homemade hot chocolate not only tastes better than pre-mixed brands, but it’s better for you too.

I’m not going to put any companies down by name. But, a super popular hot cocoa brand contains corn syrup, dipotassium phosphate, and mono- and diglycerides. I’m not going to spend a lot of time scrutinizing each of the ingredients. However, I will take a moment to talk about dipotassium phosphate.

According to a medically reviewed article on WebMD, consuming dipotassium phosphate can lead to digestive problems, heart problems, and kidney problems. I mean, it’s made in a lab. What do you expect?

In contrast, this homemade hot chocolate recipe contains only a few ingredients, all of which are natural and safe.

How to Make Hot Chocolate with Cocoa Powder on the Stove

  1. Fill your coffee cup with milk, leaving about an inch of space from the top.
  2. Pour the milk into a pan and heat it on medium-low heat, stirring occasionally with a whisk, so the milk doesn’t burn on the bottom of the pan.
  3. When the milk is warm, add the sugar, cocoa powder, and vanilla. Whisk vigorously until well blended.
  4. Lower the heat slightly and add the Ski Queen cheese, a little bit at a time, stirring constantly until it has all been incorporated. Do not add the cheese to the milk when it’s too hot or it may become stringy!
  5. Enjoy!
